Priming

Why do we prime our siding and decking?

Everything you read about finishing wood siding and decking, whether it is Cypress, Red Cedar, or whatever specie, it is recommended that you prime the back side of the board! Why is this so important? Any wood that is used in an exterior application will gain and lose moisture as the relative humidity changes and as rain snow and wind bombard the exposed surface. If you finish only one side of a board the board will gain and lose moisture faster from the unfinished side than the finished side. This will dramatically increase the amount of movement associated with changes in the moisture content on the wood. The primer and topcoat also protect against the damage done by UV rays in sunlight. Wood movement due to changes in moisture content and the deterioration of the wood surface by sunlight is the number one enemy of natural wood siding, not rot!

Most unfinished Red Cedar siding will last about 20 years before the accumulated stresses of the dramatic changes in humidity, water penetration, freeze thaw cycles and the effects of sunshine in the Midwest will degrade it. It won’t rot, it will just start to fall apart in about 15 to 20 years. It takes 70 years to grow another Cedar tree! You do the math. Unfinished Cypress siding will probably last a little longer due the fact that it is a denser and tougher wood. But it still takes 70 years to grow another Cypress tree!

So to save some resources and give you a siding that will last for years and look great  --

We highly recommend machine priming all siding wood with 2 coats of Timber-Pro UV and saturate all end cuts during installation. After everything is installed apply a topcoat of Timber-Pro UV.  Timber-Pro UV  (http://www.timberprocoatings.com/) is a transparent or semi transparent finish for siding and  softwood decking. Timber-Tek UV is a smooth blend of natural oil resins and state of the art additives using water as a carrier instead of flammable solvents. Has excellent color retention and lightens slightly with age. Refinishes very easily!
